1/26 - 1/30 Week in Review

Hello Friends,

Word of the week: Resilient

As January draws to a close, resilient became our guiding word. Two snow days, part of a stretch of record-breaking winter weather, asked us to slow down, shovel often, and stay flexible.

We returned by opening our financial literacy unit, beginning with money mindset. Before grants arrive, fellows paused to reflect on their relationship with money, imagining how they might spend, save, and learn. We’ll return to these reflections at the end of the month to reflect and better understand their habits.

At Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, our new curriculum partner, fellows opened bank accounts. Over the coming months, their team will host workshops on credit cards, high-yield savings accounts, and taxes (things many of us probably wish we had learned when we were 18).

At Hudson River Maritime Museum, fellows jumped back into paddle-making, with wood shavings flying and shapes beginning to take form. In true Place Corps fashion we will be saving the shavings to donate to community gardens for spring mulching, resourceful and community-minded.

We headed to the YMCA for Personal Praxis. We took a tour of the space and got a little lost along the way too. From treadmills to strength equipment to pickup basketball, everyone quite literally moved to their own tune.

We wrapped up the week with O+ Mural Tour, Part Two (van edition). This offered a different kind of exploration as we drove through town to view murals that are more difficult to access on foot. One especially meaningful stop was the mural on our very own Place Corps building, created by Hyura, one of the artist’s final works before her passing.

Beyond the murals, O+ also invites the community to Megaphones & Monoliths, an exhibition of drawings and sculpture by Don Johnson: an accomplished artist, High Falls resident, and longtime supporter of O+’s mission to provide healthcare access to artists.

It was a short week that was shaped by weather and will. Resilient, in every sense.

Have a good weekend,

Place Corps Team
