Hello Friends,

Word of the week: Choices

As we dive into April, we reflected on the many choices we make: what to eat, what to wear, and, more importantly, what comes next in our lives. Place Corps is all about helping fellows navigate these decisions, especially as they approach the end of the program.

This week, we spent the morning volunteering at Community Blue Fridge and Kingston Emergency Food Collaborative (KEFC) by designing flyers. Fellows explored what makes an effective flyer, keeping it catchy and simple while avoiding too much text or small fonts. One fellow even created custom images on their tablet to enhance the design. The group brainstormed ways to convey the organization's mission through impactful slogans and discussed the best places to distribute the flyers. We all agreed that buses, which travel throughout the community, would be a great option. We’re excited to see the final product in action!

In the afternoon, we transformed our homeroom into a photography studio, where fellows curated and shot still-life images. Drawing inspiration from various artists, we explored framing, intention, and lighting. This session will contribute to our upcoming CPW exhibition, including a group shot representing Place Corps’ cooking culture. With seven fellows bringing different creative perspectives, the experience highlighted both the power and challenges of collaboration.

At CPW, fellows continued exhibit preparations with collaging on tiles, printing photos, and heading out to Broadway to capture more images. The sunny (but chilly!) weather made for an exciting day of on location photography. As we enter crunch time for the exhibition, the energy and focus are palpable.

Later in the afternoon, fellows screen-printed their designs onto naturally dyed fabrics with Aurora. Choosing the right color combinations led to a range of creative outcomes, each reflecting their unique styles. The room was filled with color, and it was inspiring to see their artistic expressions come to life.

To start the morning, Suzi led a yoga session, where Max from HRMM joined. The practice focused on movement and the power of choice. Fellows reflected on what their lives might look like had they not chosen Place Corps, leading to a thoughtful conversation about self-discovery and gratitude. Suzi emphasized the importance of choosing yourself, kindness, and happiness.

At HRMM, we continued working on the boat and had an exciting unveiling of our red sail! Everything is coming together beautifully as we finish up working on the mast and sanding the boat’s structure.

Our fellows had an amazing volunteering opportunity with the Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW) in preparation for their beloved Chili Bowl Fest Fundraiser. For over 25 years, this celebration of community and ceramics has brought people together to support WSW’s artistic programming. Fellows supported the event as parking attendants and event helpers, contributing to an afternoon filled with live music, hundreds of handcrafted bowls and mugs, and delicious chili donated by local eateries. With both in-person and online sales, the in-person portion ran from 2–7PM at WSW, featuring over 500 unique ceramic pieces made by local artists, staff, interns, and volunteers. Each purchase came with a free serving of chili, making it a joyful and cozy celebration of creativity and community. We're proud to have been part of such a meaningful event!

Wishing you a weekend full of good choices!

Have a good weekend,

Place Corps Team
