Mission Driven Leadership & Entrepreneurship

Goals

The Mission-Driven Leadership and Entrepreneurship curriculum is structured to equip fellows with the skills and knowledge necessary to become effective socio-ecological leaders, active community members, and innovators and entrepreneurs capable of driving positive change.

This pillar of Place Corps curriculum emphasizes the importance of developing projects, both small-scale and large-scale, that positively impact our Places, our neighbors, and our economies. Over the past few years, fellows have made significant contributions to the Kingston community through developing and implementing these initiatives.

Projects

Access Kingston: A fellow-led project took on the issue of accessibility for those with physical disabilities in the City of Kingston. Fellows evaluated the accessibility of public and commercial spaces, such as parks, sidewalks, restaurants and civic buildings and determined that many of these spaces where not accessible to community members with physical disabilities. They then designed and ultimately installed ramps, railings and tools to make these spaces more accessible (putting their design + build skills to work!).

The Pink Trail: This is a project currently underway in collaboration with KaN Landscape Design Studio. This Fellow-led initiative aims to design, build, and install publicly accessible and visible materials, such as tampons and pads, for people who menstruate. In addition to planning the location and design of these installations, fellows will also be putting their communication skills to work, developing a campaign to spread the word about the Pink Trail in the community, and educating people on, and de-stigmatizing the subject of menstruation, in collaboration with print and zine maker and educator Cosmic Doghouse Press.
